Broadnax’s Basketball Blueprints

Passion. Development. Confidence. Leadership.
Hi, I’m Alfredo “Coach Al” Broadnax, a retired Army First Sergeant and an Iraq and Afghanistan Veteran. I’ve spent my career leading Soldiers, developing training plans, and fostering discipline, teamwork, and resilience. While I never played college or professional basketball, I’ve been immersed in the game for years, playing in intramural leagues across the world. My love for the sport and my background in physical training naturally led me to coaching—and it all started with a twist of fate.
How It All Began
One week before the basketball season started, I got a call. The team needed a coach—fast. I wasn’t the first choice, or even the second. But I was the only option left. No prior coaching experience, no guidebook to follow—just a love for the game and a belief that with the right approach, I could give these kids something special.
I wasn’t going to let them down.
From day one, my goal was clear: ensure every child had fun, developed their skills, and gained confidence as the season progressed. Since I couldn’t find a single comprehensive resource to guide me, I pieced together strategies from various sources. But in the end, experience became my best teacher. I documented everything—what worked, what didn’t, and how we could improve. Week by week, I adjusted our training plan, and something incredible happened.
We started winning. Not just on the scoreboard, but in our growth as a team. Parents bought into my program, my assistant coach reinforced our vision, and the kids flourished. We went on a thrilling run that took us all the way to the championship game. Though we fell short, the journey was nothing short of amazing.
My Coaching Philosophy
Through that unforgettable season, I developed a blueprint for youth basketball training that’s effective at every level. This isn’t just about running drills—it’s about building confident, disciplined, and passionate young athletes. Here’s the foundation of my coaching philosophy:
1. Understanding Strengths and Weaknesses
Every player has unique abilities. My first priority is honest evaluation—knowing what we’re good at and what needs work. Training isn’t one-size-fits-all; it’s about tailoring development to maximize potential.
2. Parent Buy-In
One of the most underestimated aspects of coaching youth basketball is parental involvement. When parents understand and support the program, it strengthens the entire team. Communication and engagement from the sidelines to the practice court make a huge impact.
3. Continuous Evaluation & Adaptation
A training plan isn’t set in stone—it evolves. I made real-time adjustments every week based on my scouting reports and game performances. Adapting is key to unlocking potential.
4. Age-Appropriate Drills & Development
For younger players, it’s not just about competition—it’s about building fundamentals in a way that keeps them excited and engaged. I focused on drills that not only improved their skills but also boosted their confidence.
Why I Do This
Youth basketball is bigger than the game itself. It’s about teaching kid’s life lessons—discipline, teamwork, resilience, and self-belief. I’ve seen firsthand how a structured, passionate approach can transform a team. I’ve lived it, learned from it, and now, I’m here to share my knowledge with you.
